Getting Started

How do I create an account?

When you first open BreedBuddy, you'll be prompted to sign up. Simply enter your email address and create a password. You'll also be asked to provide your first and last name during sign-up.

How do I add my first plant?

Tap the "+" button in the Plants tab, or use the "Add Plant" option from the main menu. Enter a name (optional), select a species, and set the planting date. If you don't enter a name, the app will automatically assign a number based on your species (e.g., Tr-001 for Trifolium repens).

What is automatic plant numbering?

BreedBuddy automatically assigns sequential numbers to plants when you don't provide a custom name. The format is based on your species name (e.g., "Tr-001" for Trifolium repens). This helps you track plants systematically while still allowing custom names when needed.

Common Questions

How do I record a cross between two plants?

Navigate to the Breeding tab and tap the "+" button. Select the female and male parents, set the cross date, and add any notes. The app will automatically create grow log entries for both parent plants.

Can I track plants from different species?

Yes! BreedBuddy supports tracking plants from multiple species. You can create species in the Trait Glossary view, and each plant can be assigned to a species. This is especially useful for inter-specific hybrid tracking.

How do I view a plant's pedigree?

Open any plant's detail view and tap "View Pedigree" to see a visual tree of its ancestors. You can navigate up to 200 generations (configurable in settings). The pedigree shows both parents, grandparents, and so on, with visual indicators for dead plants.

How do notifications work?

When you apply a treatment (fertilizer, pesticide, etc.) to a plant, BreedBuddy automatically creates a notification schedule. You'll receive reminders based on the interval you set (default is 14 days). You can customize notification settings per plant in the plant's detail view.

Can I use the app offline?

Yes! BreedBuddy works offline-first. All your data is stored locally on your device. When you have an internet connection, your data automatically syncs to the cloud for backup and access across devices.

How do I organize plants into trays?

Create a tray in the Trays tab, then add plants to it. You can add plants individually or select multiple plants at once. Trays are useful for grouping plants that are growing together or need the same care schedule.

Troubleshooting

My data isn't syncing

If your data isn't syncing:

  • Check your internet connection
  • Ensure you're signed in to your account
  • Try pulling down to refresh on the main screen
  • Check that you have sufficient storage space

If issues persist, try signing out and signing back in.

Photos aren't uploading

If photos aren't uploading:

  • Check your internet connection (photos require more bandwidth)
  • Ensure you have sufficient storage space
  • Try uploading photos one at a time
  • Check that you've granted camera/photo library permissions

I can't see my plants

If you can't see your plants:

  • Check that you're signed in to the correct account
  • Try pulling down to refresh
  • Check your search/filter settings
  • Ensure the plants aren't marked as "dead" if you're filtering those out

Notifications aren't working

If notifications aren't appearing:

  • Check that notifications are enabled in iOS Settings > BreedBuddy
  • Ensure you've set up notification schedules for your plants
  • Check that the notification date hasn't passed
  • Try restarting the app

Tip: If you're experiencing persistent issues, try force-closing the app and reopening it, or restarting your device.

Features & Tips

Using Barcode Scanning

BreedBuddy supports barcode scanning for quick plant, batch, and tray lookup. Tap the barcode icon in any search field to activate the scanner. This is especially useful when you have physical labels on your plants.

Grow Log Entries

Grow log entries are automatically created when you make crosses or apply treatments. You can also manually add notes, milestones, and photos. Use milestones to mark important events like flowering, fruiting, or harvest.

Batch Management

Create batches to track your fertilizers, pesticides, and other treatments. When you apply a treatment from a batch, BreedBuddy records which batch was used. This helps with traceability and inventory management.

Trait Tracking

Define custom traits for each species and track them on individual plants. This is useful for recording characteristics like flower color, leaf shape, or disease resistance. You can attach photos to trait observations.

Pedigree Depth Settings

By default, pedigrees show up to 200 generations. You can adjust this in Settings > About > Advanced. Lower values can improve performance for very large pedigrees, while higher values show more detail.

Data & Privacy

Where is my data stored?

Your data is stored locally on your device and automatically synced to secure cloud servers. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Only you can access your data with your account credentials.

Can I export my data?

Currently, your data is accessible through the app and cloud sync. Export functionality may be added in future updates. Your data remains accessible as long as you maintain your account.

What happens if I delete the app?

If you delete the app, your local data will be removed from your device. However, your cloud data will remain stored. Simply reinstall the app and sign in to restore your data.

Important: To ensure you don't lose data, make sure you're signed in and have synced before deleting the app. We recommend keeping the app installed or ensuring a recent sync before removal.
